Never Mind the Burgers, Here’s An American Perspective

The Meat Liquor burger - huge fuss over nothing special?

The best hamburger I’ve had since moving to London in 2001 was during a visit to the States. It cost one dollar and came handed to me in a paper bag via a drive-through window from the first convenient car park I pulled my hired car into, as I drove from Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport en route to a Christmas back home with my family. The burger was juicy, compactly constructed to eat while driving and ample enough to keep my hunger abated until I arrived at my mom’s house a few hours away. It hit the right spot at the right time … and for the right price.

Kimchi, Bibimbap, Japchae. Do those words have you licking your lips or scratching your head?

Hawksmoor Guildhall’s Seven-Course Beef Tasting Menu

Photo: Dan Lepard

With a runny nose and running slightly late I stumbled through the newly spruced up doors of the Guildhall – the latest edition to the Hawksmoor portfolio.

Foraging, Mark Hix and Whisky

Spoils from Lyme Regis, Dorset. Photo by Chris Osburn

Frankly the weather was miserable – at least while outside stumbling around on a windswept beach, getting drenched and having a go at foraging (ie trying to discern sea cabbage and rock samphire from dog poo and random rubbish). A PR-led overnight visit to the Dorset coast hosted by Talisker Whisky and Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis had me out of London and bumbling about in the pouring rain alongside a gaggle of food bloggers, journos, a couple of PRs, some Talisker reps and chef/restauranteur Mark Hix.

We were foraging. We’d left a sunshiny London to watch the skies turn darker and grimmer as we chugged along the tracks for the few hours train ride from Waterloo to Axminster. A quick sit on a hired coach to the coast followed by a brief all things Talisker presentation at the Oyster & Fish House and we were out near the waves getting a lesson in edible sea plants from local boy done good, Mark Hix.

A Visit to Innocent Drinks’ Fruit Towers

Just how innocent are Innocent?

What does it mean when Innocent Drinks offers you an ‘exclusive Golden Ticket’ to their annual Innocent AGM (‘a grown-up meeting’)? Aside from spending a Saturday drinking lots and lots of smoothies and taking home even more, it’s an opportunity to catch an (albeit tidied up) glimpse into the working culture of this beloved British brand and find out firsthand about the fruits of their labour.
