Anyway, onto more pressing matters…
The festive season may be just around the corner, but many of us are worried about just how cheerful we’ll be feeling with what seems like an economic grey cloud cast over us this holiday season.
True, we all need to tighten our belts and save for rainy days ahead, but there’s really no need to stop having fun with family and friends! I’ve gathered some food for thought about how to make your time with loved ones memorable, delicious, and stress-free.
- It’s true: Eating in is the new eating out! So pull on your Christmas jumper and nibble on some finger food (but steer clear of your own fingers—ouch!). Some good bets are blini with smoked salmon — what could be more British? Just use good quality Scottish smoked salmon, and prosciutto-wrapped scallops — a snap to sauté and extremely tasty.
- Make your own drinks (pubs and bars tend to get pricey this time of year). What could be better when it’s cold out than a soul-warming glass of mulled wine — with plenty of cinnamon. And plenty of wine!
- Plan ahead when buying your ingredients. I tend to start my festive food shop at least two weeks ahead of time, so I’m stocked up on dried fruit, nuts and other dry ingredients I’ll need for making my stuffing, pumpkin pie etc. (And I won’t have as much to lug when I make my last-minute trips to the store!)
- Make sure you book your turkey ahead of time. Don’t get caught with all the last-minute nuts on Christmas Eve, dashing around M&S at crazy-hour a.m., when you should be at home sleeping or at the very least enjoying a cuppa. With an obligatory dip into the Roses (or Quality Street) tin of course! (I digress but let’s pick up the big debate on Roses Vs Quality Street later this week).
Now that you’re armed with these make-life easier tips, sit back, relax and enjoy a fantastic holiday special.
